Final score: Nationals 4, Mets 3—District of ColumbiUGH

That was a less than ideal way to end this series.

MLB: New York Mets at Washington Nationals Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets were on the verge of winning for the fourth time in five days against the last-place Nationals, but Edwin Díaz blew his second straight save against the club, this time giving up two runs in the ninth inning to give the Amazins a 4-3 defeat.

Trevor Williams made his third start for the Mets. Through five innings of work, the Nationals were able to scatter a whopping ten hits against him, and he twice immediately surrendered leads by giving up runs in the first and fourth innings. However, he also limited the damage by holding the Nationals to just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Jeurys Familia, Brad Hand, and Seth Lugo then combined for three shutout innings (with Lugo being assisted by a terrific defensive play by Javier Báez to end the inning and save a run).

The Mets offense, meanwhile, didn’t have quite the offensive explosion that it’s had in some of the earlier games in this series, but they were able to put enough runs on the board to give themselves a lead for a good chunk of the day. Pete Alonso got the scoring started in the first with an RBI single, and he also contributed a solo homer (his 30th of the season) later on. Add a run-scoring double play in the top of the fourth inning, and it was enough to give the Mets a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth inning. Alas, Díaz walked two of the first three hitters, and Andrew Stevenson—who also hit a clutch two-run homer against the Mets to tie the game earlier in the series—hit a single to right field to bring home the tying run. Following that deflating blow, Carter Kieboom hit a ground ball up the middle that Francisco Lindor couldn’t quite handle, and the winning run came home to send the Mets out of DC on a sour note.

Full recap to follow.
