Meet the Mets

John Harper weighs the pros and cons of the Mets signing J.D. Martinez versus Justin Turner to serve in their DH role.

Now that Lucas Giolito—who the Mets had shown interest in—is off the board, John Flanigan of SNY takes a look at other still-available pitchers the Mets should consider signing.

Starling Marte is in the Dominican Republic practicing and is likely to make his winter ball debut after New Year’s Day, according to reporting from Will Sammon of The Athletic.

Sammon also notes that Ronny Mauricio’s ACL surgery is scheduled for shortly after New Year’s Day in New York and that the Mets still may be seeking “more robust” bullpen help than the inexpensive relievers they have signed thus far this winter.

2023 was a bleak year for New York baseball with both the Mets and Yankees having mediocre seasons, writes Larry Fleisher of Forbes.

Around the National League East

In a major move to bolster their starting rotation, the Braves acquired Chris Sale from the Red Sox in exchange for Vaughn Grissom. Boston also sent cash to Atlanta in the trade.

According to reports, the Phillies’ City Connect uniforms, which are set to make their debut in 2024, will feature the colors of Philadelphia’s city flag.

Around Major League Baseball

The Reds signed right-hander Frankie Montas to a one-year, $16 million contract, pending a physical.

Former Met Michael Pérez signed a minor league deal with the Orioles.

The Angels and free agent pitcher Zach Plesac are in agreement on a major league deal, but the terms of the contract are not yet known.

MLB Trade Rumors reviewed all of the managers and top front office executives on expiring contracts across baseball.
