Mets Morning News: MLB honors Negro Leagues with game at Rickwood Field

The Mets had the day off yesterday, and they’ll begin their three-game series in Chicago this afternoon with catcher Joe Hudson on the roster as Luis Torrens has been placed on the paternity list.

Here’s a message from former Mets owner Joan Payson’s family to the family of Willie Mays following his passing.

The Mets are doing a no-fees promotion for single game tickets to any game purchased online through June 27.

The Mets announced some details about their Pride Night celebration, which takes place a week from tonight at Citi Field.

Major League Baseball honored the Negro Leagues with a game between the Giants and Cardinals at Rickwood Field, and Katie Woo wrote about the celebration that took place heading into the game.

Negro Leagues legends gathered and told stories at a brunch at the Negro Leagues Museum.

Here’s a great video from Rickwood Field celebrating its history. 99-year-old Bill Greason, who played for the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro League and eventually the Cardinals, threw out the first pitch. And he appeared in an excellent in-game interview.

Willie Mays was honored before the game, and Curtis Granderson was there and excited for the event. Albert Pujols, who got to spend time with Willie Mays during the 2007 All-Star Game festivities, remembered him ahead of the Rickwood Field game.

Barry Bonds discussed a hypothetical matchup between himself and the legendary Satchel Paige during pre-game coverage.

As for the game at Rickwood Field, the Cardinals beat the Giants by a 6-5 score.

Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn said the day felt like it was bigger than baseball.

The Orioles scored 17 runs in a rout of the Yankees.

Jasson Domínguez, one of the Yankees’ best prospects, is set to miss eight weeks because of an oblique injury. The Yankees also signed lefty reliever Tim Hill and designated Clayton Andrews for assignment to clear a spot for him on the roster.

The Royals hit three solo home runs in a win over the A’s.

Gavin Stone paved the way for the Dodgers in a win over the Rockies.

The Astros took the rubber game of their series against the White Sox.

Houston is promoting pitching prospect Jake Bloss straight from Double-A to the big leagues for his major league debut today.

The Rays made up for a brutal ninth inning by beating the Twins in extra innings.

The Guardians beat the Mariners in their series finale.

Down by two heading to the top of the ninth, the Brewers tied the Padres only to see Jake Cronenworth walk them off in a 7-6 loss in the bottom of the inning.
