It exerted 900 pounds of force on Tejada's leg.

This SportsCenter Sports Science video analyzes Chase Utley's late "slide" into Ruben Tejada from Game 2 of the NLDS against the Dodgers. It essentially corroborates what we already knew, that the slide was very late and nearly certain to be injurious. Utley has insisted that he didn't intend to injure Tejada, which is fine and probably true, though it's a bit disingenuous. For example, if I started hucking rocks at Chase Utley because I was trying to knock his hat off, I shouldn't be too surprised if some of the rocks hit him in his face and put his eye out. Hey, I wasn't trying to injure him!

As for the video, the analysis suggests that:

Utley began his slide just three feet before he reached second base.

Utley's collision with Tejada's leg exerted 900 pounds of force.

Utley is a smelly jerk.

Were it not for Tejada's leg being in the way, Utley's slide would have carried him fifteen feet past second base.

He's gone for the rest of the playoffs, but will he be ready for spring training?

Ruben Tejada suffered a broken right fibula after a vicious "slide" from the Dodgers' Chase Utley that dramatically shifted the outcome of Game 2. Although he is gone for the rest of the postseason, what can we expect Tejada's recovery timeline to look like?

What is the injury?

The fibula is the smaller of the two shin bones and is located on the outside part of the shin. Its primary role is to provide stabilization for the ankle, as many ligaments attach to it; these ligaments prevent the ankle from rolling during walking and running.

What is the expected recovery time?

You can expect Tejada to be sidelined for about 4-6 weeks before he can begin to starting running again. A closer look at the play showed that Utley's forearm hit Tejada's fibula above the ankle joint, which is probably good news for the recovery process as the ankle joint is likely stable. If the injury occurred at the level of the ankle, then the rehab would be a lot more complicated and take a much longer time. The good thing about this injury is that the fibula is a non-weight-bearing bone so recovery time is considerably shorter than a normal fracture in the leg.

The Mets will likely take the conservative route and place Tejada in a boot with crutches to avoid putting additional stress on the fracture site until the bone has completely healed. The length of time in a boot is pivotal to his length of recovery as muscle tightness and joint stiffness increases the longer Tejada is in the boot. Once the boot is taken off, rehab will focus on regaining strength and mobility of the ankle, calf, and foot. Given the timing of the injury, Tejada and the Mets can take their time to make sure there is no setback as Tejada should be good to go for spring training. He may miss the beginning of winter ball if Tejada wants to play—for rehab purposes—during the offseason. Once the recovery is done, the fibula should be just as strong as it was before the injury.

Utley broke Ruben Tejada's right leg in the seventh inning of Saturday's game with a nasty slide at second.

Dodgers infielder Chase Utley has been suspended for Games 3 and 4 of the NLDS following his slide into Ruben Tejada in the seventh inning of Saturday's game.

"After thoroughly reviewing the play from all conceivable angles, I have concluded that Mr. Utley's action warrants discipline," MLB Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre announced.

"While I sincerely believe that Mr. Utley had no intention of injuring Ruben Tejada, and was attempting to help his Club in a critical situation, I believe his slide was in violation of Official Baseball Rule 5.09 (a)(13), which is designed to protect fielders from precisely this type of rolling block that occurs away from the base."

After Utley's slide, which broke Tejada's leg and ended his season, players and pundits came out both for and against the legality of dirty slides.

Torre also said that MLB has been in discussions with the Players Association throughout the year about possibly changing rules to better protect middle infielders, similar to home plate collision rules designed to protect catches.

Utley will appeal the ruling, which would delay his suspension until after the process is complete, meaning that he might not even have to serve his suspension in the postseason if the Dodgers do not move on to the NLCS and the ruling takes longer than a few days.

Utley's agent, Joel Wolfe, issued a statement on the infielder's behalf:

"A two game suspension for a legal baseball play is outrageous and completely unacceptable. Chase did what all players are taught to do in this situation -- break up the double play. We routinely see plays at second base similar to this one that have not resulted in suspensions. Chase feels terrible about Ruben Tejada's injury and everyone who knows him knows that he would never intentionally hurt anybody. we will be appealing this suspension immediately."

MLB will likely expedite the process and they hope to have a verdict before the game tomorrow.

After the announcement, the Mets issued a subsequent statement, saying that they "completely support the decision...and feel this was the appropriate course of action."

"With this decision behind us, the team and our fans can now focus on playing winning baseball."

Michael Conforto's second-inning blast in Game 2 of the NLDS became just the second Met to ever homer in his first postseason at-bat.

Michael Conforto's rise to prominence with the Mets this season continued in Game 2 of the NL Division Series last night. With his second-inning home run off of Dodgers starter Zack Greinke, Conforto joined two very elite groups in Mets' history. He became only the second Met to homer in his first postseason at-bat, and only the fourth Met to homer in his first postseason game.

The only other Met to homer in his first postseason at-bat is Edgardo Alfonzo, who took former Arizona Diamondbacks ace and Hall of Famer Randy Johnson deep in Game 1 of the 1999 NL Division Series. It was part of a huge day for Alfonzo who would hit a grand slam in the ninth inning off of Bobby Chouinard that broke a 4-4 tie and lifted the Mets to an 8-4 victory.

Two other Mets have homered in their first postseason game. Current Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy joined the club on Friday in Game 1 of the NLDS, when he hit a fourth-inning solo shot off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. Former Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado victimized the Dodgers as well, back in Game 1 of the 2006 NLDS. Delgado homered off of Dodgers starter Derek Lowe in the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1 at the time. Delgado finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBIs, as the Mets won that game 6-5 and went on to sweep the series from Los Angeles 3-0.

Most thought it was a dirty slide. Some did not.

In the bottom of the seventh inning of tonight's 5-2 Mets loss to the Dodgers, Chase Utley took out Ruben Tejada with a slide that we can charitably describe as having questionable intent. Tejada was crashed into violently and left the game on a stretcher with his leg in a stabilizing cast. We quickly learned that x-rays were positive and that Tejada would miss the rest of the postseason with a broken fibula.

The resulting play was confusing to all involved. Utley was originally ruled out, but an umpire replay overturned the call on the field and Utley returned to second base, soon to score the go-ahead run. Here's the play in case you haven't seen it yet.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Whether or not this was a neighborhood play, or whether Tejada touched the bag, is not really what's at stake. The salient question is whether baseball wants to continue allowing—or in some cases encouraging—deliberately injurious slides like this to continue. Current and former players reflexively adjudicated the matter on Twitter.

Pedro Martinez nails it.

With the series now tied, Matt Harvey is set to start Game 3 for the Mets on Monday.

A game that started well for the Mets ended terribly, and their NLDS series with the Dodgers is tied at one game apiece. Any Mets loss would have been frustrating, but the way this one went was probably as frustrating as a game could possibly get.

Zack Greinke looked decidedly human early, as he gave up solo home runs to Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto in the second inning. Noah Syndergaard came out of the gate throwing hard—with several pitches at or above 100 miles per hour—and held the Dodgers to one run through six innings before taking the mound to start the seventh.

Syndergaard recorded an out in that inning but issued a walk to Enrique Hernandez and a pinch-hit single to Chase Utley to put runners on the corners. Terry Collins turned to Bartolo Colon, who gave up a relatively hard-hit ground ball that Daniel Murphy fielded and tossed to Ruben Tejada at second base. But Utley slid extremely late—a dirty slide if there ever were one—and broke Tejada’s leg.

And when the play went to replay review, Major League Baseball decided Utley was safe—even though neither he nor Tejada touched second base. Even those who made the ruling didn’t sound too confident in their explanation of it after the game.

After the long delay to take Tejada off the field on a cart, Addison Reed came in for the Mets and gave up a two-run double to Adrian Gonzalez and a one-run double to Justin Turner, effectively ending the game.

Game 3 can’t get here soon enough, but Game 2 was one to forget.

We probably should have also talked about Syndergaard's start, and the bullpen management in the seventh inning, and the Mets recent offensive struggles, but any and all of that would be burying the lead here.

As always, you can listen or subscribe to the podcast through iTUNES, find us on the stitcher app, listen through the embedded player below, or download the podcast directly from Blog Talk Radio.

And don't forget you can e-mail the show at podcast@amazinavenueaudio.com, and we'll be back on Monday with hopefully a more coherent recap of Game Three of the National League Divisional Series. We may be recording this on the 7 and unable to read all your reasoned screeds tho.

The Mets lost a late lead immediately after Chase Utley broke Ruben Tejada's leg.

The Mets lost Game 2 of the NLDS to the Dodgers by the score of 5-2. That doesn’t even come close to summing things up. After a couple of solo home runs early in the game by Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto, the Mets didn’t score again.

But Noah Syndergaard pitched very well through six innings, started the seventh, and allowed a couple of baserunners on one out before the Mets went to the bullpen. Bartolo Colon induced a ground ball, and just after Daniel Murphy flipped it to Ruben Tejada, the shortstop turned to make a throw to first but was obliterated by a heinous Chase Utley slide that broke his right leg. And to top things off, the out call at second was overturned on a replay because Tejada never touched the base—neighborhood rule be damned—and Utley, who never touched second base himself, got to re-take the base as Tejada was carted out a door in the Mets’ bullpen.

The Dodgers went on to score three runs in the inning, with Utley scoring the one that decided the game. Baseball at its worst.
